Centipedes are generally flattened and have a pair of well developed antennae on the head. Some centipedes, such as the house centipede, have long legs and are capable of running rapidly. They are active at night. Centipedes feed on insects and spiders.

As Centipedes primarily feed upon other insects and most common household insects require dampness and some decaying organic matter to survive, the solution is obvious. You should remove all organic debris that is just outside of the property and reduce dampness in basements.

However, there are natural conditions that support more Centipedes in some backyards than others. In unusual circumstances or for low tolerance of these Pests, your only choice may be to have a professional extermination service.

  • Centipedes are mostly nocturnal in their behaviour.

  • Some of their species can live up to 6 years.

  • They eat a large variety of insects.

  • While Latin origins of Centipede mean hundred legs, actually Centipedes have about 15-30 pairs of legs.

  • While Centipedes and Millipedes look similar, it is Millipedes that have twice the number of legs – two pairs per segment of the body.

Some people describe Centipedes as a moustache running on the floor.

Pincer-Like Forcipules

The very first pair of a Centipede’s legs form a pincer-like attachment called Forcipules. Centipedes use them to capture a prey and inject venom. In defence Centipedes can cause a bite to humans as well. The physiological reaction could chills, fever, weakness and severe pain.
