Bed Bugs are blood sucking pests of humans. They sneakily crawl up on our arms, legs or neck and suck blood similar to how a mosquito does. Typically they take 5 minutes to fully feed and then they are off to safe nesting grounds. Unlike mosquitos and Dog Fleas, Bed Bugs are not in your face. They are quite a sneaky parasite. It is in their best interest that you remain unaware of their existence in your sleeping quarters.

Bed Bugs can become a problem in any home, office and even vehicles. They just have to hitch hike to a new place of human rest or sleep and achieve access to a good host.

The adult Bed Bug is quite flat (about the height of a credit card’s thickness) and is of an oval shape.

Adult Bed Bugs are usually reddish brown and range from 6 to 9.5 mm in length. After feeding, the body is often swollen and red in color.

The female Bed Bug lays approximately 200 eggs during her life span at a rate of one to 12 eggs per day. The eggs are laid on rough surfaces and coated with a transparent cement to adhere them to the substrate. Within six to 17 days Bed Bug nymphs, almost devoid of color, emerge from the eggs. After five molts, which takes approximately ten weeks, the nymphs reach maturity.

Certainly, yes. But the actual issue is finding them and not so much seeing them. We are talking about the adult Bed Bug. While baby Bed Bugs would still bite and feed on us just like an adult, the baby Bed Bugs can be as small as 1/20th the size of an adult.

While different people would have varying skin reactions to a Bed Bug bite, practically, disease transfer is not a risk. Some people have no skin irritation and other would have quite large hives and welts. The psychological and emotional impact of Bed Bugs is quite heavy. The physiological implications are not significant in the initial stages of a Bed Bug infestation.

It truly depends upon the level of infestation and one may not accurately realize the severity of it objectively. While experienced exterminators will have a good understanding of risks based on their experience, for a lay-person it may be hard to gauge the implications. In any case when visiting avoiding bedrooms is the best approach. Dining rooms are way more safer than family rooms.

Keep luggage away from Bed Rooms

When you return from travel, empty and store your luggage away from bed rooms. Only bring those clothing articles to your bed room closets that have been laundered. Also hand bags should be carefully cleaned.

Keep your suitcases and hand bags as far away from bed as possible. Keep least number items on beds. Tables and chairs are way more safer than beds. That’s just a precaution. This way even if Bed Bugs were present in the hotel room and fed on you in your sleep, it is unlikely that you would bring them to your home in your luggage.

It is many a times that we find a client has bought used furniture or considered reusing a discarded item and later found out that it had Bed Bugs in it. It can be avoided by a doing a good inspection and cleaning.

Do not use Diatomaceous Earth. It is too messy and not effective enough.

Would replacing my bed with a brand new one not get rid of the bed bugs too?

While, it will definitely reduce the extent of the problem with very small  chance that it may even end it, we do not recommend it. You need a professional assessment of the situation to see if getting a new bed has a decent chance of success. Chances of elimination of Bed Bugs improve if you are replacing the bed frame along with the mattress and box spring. Do not expect buying a new bed or moving to another residence will guarantee riddance from Bed Bugs.

Buying Pesticides from Internet or home hardware stores ?

Do not waste your time and money on domestic Pesticides . If anything get excellent light and excellent vacuum and suck Bed Bugs away. Remember, half measures would just spread the problem while dampening it a bit as well for the time being.

In particular do not waste time and energy on using stuff like Diatomaceous Earth.

Is steam cleaning a viable technique ?

The effectiveness of using steam cleaners or hot water to clean mattresses is questionable. Heat is readily absorbed by the mattress and may not harm the Bed Bugs (BedBugs). In fact the moisture may produce favourable conditions for house dust mites. Pillows that have become too damp should be removed and dry-cleaned or replaced.

REMEMBER: Best DIY Tools Are Good Light And Good Vacuum.

As is obvious from the image below, Bed Bugs have little height .i.e. they are quite flat. Almost the thickness of a credit card. Their flatness helps them to sneak in little slits, etc.
