Do you have Boxelder Bugs causing problems?

Boxelder Bug – Aesthetically Nuisance Pest.

BoxElder Bug
In Ontario, Boxelder Bugs are becoming a common pest affecting boxelder, maple, and ash trees. While Boxelder Bugs feed on developing seeds on female trees, these pests can also suck away fluids from young developing leaves and adversely affect the health of the infested vegetation.

To survive winter, Boxelder Bug take advantage of vegetation debris piled near our homes and hide underneath it. Also, they would lay eggs and nest in the gaps and crack in the siding of our homes or the spaces where the ducts enter or exit our residential structures.

The spots that get a good sunlight exposure are a favourite of Boxelder Bugs, wether on vegetation or our homes.

Like other insects, when a large population develops, it would have its unsightly impact. The accumulation of Boxelder Bug fecal matter is another blemish on our residential structures.

How to Get Rid of Boxelder Bugs

Saying goes, “Intellectuals solve problems, geniuses prevent them.” So, staying vigilant and pest proofing your home is a priority. In spring and fall, you should inspect the exterior of your home for:

  • Screens on all windows and doors as they may be damaged or withering away.

  • The seals and sweeps on all windows and doors as they may be damaged or end of useful life.

  • All the entry and exit spots for cables, ducts, and wires. The caulking around these points may be needing attention.

There are a lot of holes, slits, gaps and cracks around the structure. Particularly a home with an exterior of siding or stucco is more vulnerable compared to the one with bricks.  Depending upon the size of the gaps to be filled in, a silicone caulking or cement should be used to seal off the spot. These spots may be:

  • Around Windows, doors, siding gaps, eaves and fascia.
